A First for Oman: Al Baleed Petrochemical Partners in Revolutionary CO₂-to-Chemicals Technology

Salalah, Oman – Al Baleed Petrochemical has announced its participation as a strategic partner in Carbeau, a newly established company commercializing one of the world’s most advanced electrochemical CO₂ conversion technologies. The company was recently launched following the spin-out of Avantium’s Volta Technology and is backed by a consortium including Avantium, Invest-NL, NOM, GKT, and Al Baleed Petrochemical.

The technology enables the conversion of captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) into high-value chemical products using renewable electricity, offering a practical pathway to decarbonize the chemical industry while creating sustainable feedstocks for future manufacturing. Initial commercial products include glycolic acid, a specialty chemical used in personal care and industrial applications, and PLGA, a next-generation biodegradable polymer with significant market potential.

Al Baleed Petrochemical’s participation reflects its long-term strategy to position Oman at the forefront of sustainable chemicals and carbon utilization. As the developer of the Salalah Petrochemical Park, the company is building an integrated downstream chemical hub that combines conventional petrochemicals with next-generation low-carbon technologies. The project aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040 and the country’s industrial diversification objectives.

Looking ahead, Al Baleed Petrochemical and its partners envision Salalah as a potential location for the first commercial-scale deployment of Carbeau’s technology outside Europe. This vision is supported by several strategic advantages:

  • Salalah’s excellent solar irradiation, enabling competitive renewable electricity generation.
  • Oman’s growing commitment to renewable energy and industrial electrification.
  • Existing industrial infrastructure, CO₂-emitting industries, and export logistics within the Salalah Free Zone.
  • The integration opportunities offered by the Salalah Petrochemical Park, where captured CO₂ can be transformed into high-value chemicals rather than being treated as waste.

By combining advanced carbon utilization technology with renewable electricity, Oman has the opportunity to become a regional leader in producing sustainable chemical products while reducing industrial carbon emissions.

Eng. Saeed Al Shanfari, Managing Director of Al Baleed Petrochemical commented:

“We believe the future of the chemical industry lies in transforming carbon emissions into valuable products. Oman’s strategic location, abundant solar resources, and industrial ambitions make Salalah an ideal destination for commercializing this breakthrough technology. Our vision is to establish one of the world’s first commercial CO₂-to-chemicals plants in Salalah, creating a new sustainable chemical value chain for the region.”

This partnership represents another major milestone in Al Baleed Petrochemical’s strategy of introducing world-class technologies to Oman and accelerating the country’s transition toward a circular carbon economy, positioning Salalah as a future hub for sustainable chemical manufacturing.
